CTI 1.0 / ACCELERATION

Cancrie

Cancrie produces patented advanced nanocarbons from lignocellulosic waste, i.e., coconut shells/husk. They offer customized solutions for different energy storage devices and types of batteries.

Focus sectors

  • Alternate Materials
  • Energy storage

Key Challenges and Learnings

Scalability

The solution is currently validated on three- wheeler lead-acid (L3) batteries. Scaling to four-wheelers and larger vehicles will require significant improvements in energy density and form factor, making OEM onboarding more challenging.

Long Validation Cycles

As the technology relies on alternative active materials rather than conventional chemistries, it is subject to extended testing and validation timelines. These cycles typically range from six months to 1.5 years, slowing commercialization and OEM adoption.

Impact Created

2 metric tons of coconut waste transformed into nanocarbons

Avoided 9 metric tons of carbon emissions

Improved 220 livelihoods

Up to 125% higher energy density in lithium-ion batteries.

Conventional batteries degrade rapidly under high daily usage, reducing efficiency and requiring replacement within 12-15 months. This increases operating costs and the environmental burden of battery waste. At the same time, large volumes of coconut shell and other lignocellulosic waste in India remain underutilised. Cancrie addresses both challenges by converting this bio-waste into nanocarbon active materials for battery cathodes and anodes, improving performance while reducing reliance on virgin materials.
