Saltech Design Labs

Saltech Design Labs addresses a key challenge at the intersection of construction and waste management by integrating construction and demolition waste with mixed, difficult-to-recycle plastic streams. Through a patented upcycling process, the enterprise converts single-use plastics and C&D waste into durable composite building materials, providing a resource-efficient alternative to conventional construction inputs.

Key Challenges and Learnings

Business Model Risks

Saltech prioritises the sale of turnkey manufacturing units to local partners, including municipal and government-linked entities. While this approach is less capital intensive and offers potential for systemic impact, it introduces B2G execution risks such as longer procurement cycles, higher coordination requirements, and greater dependence on public-sector adoption.

Working Capital Cycles

During the program period, the enterprise faced delays in formally securing approvals to commence the Somnath turnkey manufacturing project. Its reliance on B2G customers has resulted in longer procurement and payment cycles, increasing working capital pressures.

Long Validation Timelines

Given their focus on alternative materials, several baseline validation and testing cycles extend from nine months to over a year. The validation engagement with Tata Steel has been ongoing for nearly a year, underscoring longer qualification timelines and higher entry barriers associated with B2B market adoption.
